Michelle Obama took time off on Wednesday to share how she practices self-care – meditation.

The former First Lady encouraged her followers to take the time to look after their physical and mental well-being.
If Michelle Obama, the girls’ education champion and all-around icon, is able to take a day off to focus on self-care, none of us have any excuse to skip out. In a very personal Instagram post, Michelle recalled how she has been able to fit in some self-care into her daily routines. “Whether it was going to the gym at the crack of dawn or finding an extra moment to unwind in my favorite chair, in order for me to be at my best for others around me, I needed to find some time for myself,” she wrote. It’s an important reminder that the benefits of self-care goes far beyond ourselves. It changes how we interact with others – if we are happy, we are able to treat others better, thus passing the joy along.
However, she acknowledges that it’s not always easy, with life often getting in the way. “But it couldn’t be more important for our well-being,” she said. Her followers have taken it as a challenge, with many sharing their experiences, further motivating Michelle. “It’s wonderful stuff, truly—and in seeing your comments, I saw how powerful it is to have a community that supports us in our health,” she added. She closed her caption by challenging us to take moments with our friends to practice some self-care – because self-care doesn’t have to be a solitary experience – and share it on Instagram.
Self-care has become a point of necessity in this day and age. Considering our incredibly stressful lives and the worrisome world we live in, some self-care can go a long way towards keeping us centred and recharged.
